Ed's Web Bulletin, Issue #001 -- Are You Truly Remarkable?
January 11, 2010

Welcome to the first issue of Ed’s Web Bulletin.

I’m excited to finally launch my ezine publication having put it off weeks and weeks for subscriber numbers to build up first. New Year brings resolutions; so January 2010 will herald the beginning of a smashing new publication.

I’m open to ideas how to format the Web Bulletin, but to start I’ll be using a few ideas I like from email lists I subscribe to:

• I hate lengthy emails – I’ll keep topics brief. When explaining a concept in more detail, I’ll link to an article or prepare a downloadable file for you to read.

• Too niche? Too broad? – Whilst the topic of the Web Bulletin is online marketing in general, I won’t drill down on dozens of really specific topics. eBay auction templates one week and Google Adwords strategies the next won’t cut it. Niche articles will perhaps be available as a download.

• Members area – I’m considering a members area, not only to neatly organize all the downloads but also to give somewhere else to interact. I don’t intend for this ezine to be a one-way conversation.

I hope you can take away lots of new and practical information from this ezine, and enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing it.

The cliché – “to your success” would be very fitting here wouldn't it? Here goes...

To Your Success!

Main Article: Are You Truly Remarkable?

The concept of this article came from walking my dog in the snow this afternoon. Many of you in the UK (and Europe) will be in the middle of “the big freeze” – even us folks in the South are experiencing several inches of snow, beating records from almost thirty years ago.

Workplaces shut, roads close and school kids are free to roam the white scenary. The great thing (apart from the snowball fights) is people meet up and get creative with the snow. We’ve all seen the odd snowman, big balls of snow, snow angels etc – but what about a snow sofa, snow castle or even an igloo?

Over the course of the first snow day, an igloo gradually progressed skywards throughout the day. After a night at a balmy -5 degrees celsius the net result was a freestanding, 5 and half foot tall igloo.

It became hailed as somewhat of a tourist attraction, but for the locals. People passing along perhaps to go sledging would go in, sit down with the token bottle of frozen wine and of course pose for pictures. Over the course of the passing few days, each time I’ve walked past it’s been completely busy.

Why? It’s simply truly remarkable

What are the chances of a city in the South of England getting deep snow for starters? The weather we’ve been experiencing is exceptional. The igloo is a masterpiece in itself anyway, but in England?

Such radical changes like deep snow in Southern England are frequent all over the internet. Remember how blogs rolled out across the net, considered “mainstream” from 2004 onwards - or how social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have erupted into networking giants – or even looking at e-Commerce sites like Amazon and eBay, the founder of online auctions.

Those who are truly remarkable in a changing environment are successful. The question I pose for you is, how can YOU be truly remarkable in your environment and your niche? The examples citied above are all on a bigger scale, so how can you scaleably create something truly remarkable?

• Can you create some unique content (video, expert interview, seminar series) or tool (widget, toolbar or search bar) for your users

• Can you tap into your audience or reach an entirely new audience with your existing website? What do are there needs and wants?

• Can you develop a clear USP – your unique selling proposition – that remains remarkable all the time?

Perhaps this means you’ll have to refine or change aspects of your site as events move on. The internet is a very powerful, yet fluid marketplace.

Until next time,

Ed Fry
